September 4, 2014 - Qu'est-ce que F*&k is this? I found this sitting in, of all places, my Mom's fridge door. I KNOW that had never been there before, so when pressed, she told me she'd found it sitting on her old wire wine rack near the window. Ah. OK then, probably shot, but what the heck, we're all here having dinner, let's pop and pour.

I peel back the foil, and not-so-shockingly see some liquid stains. Yes, the bottle has leaked. Hello, probably heat damage! Off with the cage, then tug the cork, only to have it break in the neck. Man, this bottle really wants to tease me tonight. Grabbed a corkscrew and finally got it opened. Surprisingly, there was a hiss of escaping gas. Could this still be alive?

By Zeus' beard, it WAS! I poured a drop into a white wine glass and was shocked at what I found: this smelled like an older Champagne, with the telltale lemony mushrooms, cafe au lait (though here maybe more of a macchiato than a cafe au lait), minerals, and earth. On the palate, it was a tad leaner than the aromatics offered, but that was only because it needed airtime to breathe and unfold. Granted, it didn't unfold too much, but still, who'd have thunk, right? Better on the nose than the palate, but the palate was quite drinkable (and really popped with a small apricot tart from Pain Quotidien - I mean really exploded with flavor). Quite the pleasant surprise.
