Community Tasting Notes 5

February 8, 2014 - I had a very strange experience with this bottle. I opened it up and poured half of the bottle into my decanter. As I set the bottle down I notice a rather large puddle of wine on the table, but I had not spilled a drop during the decant. Upon further inspection, I found the bottle was riddled with fractures, although the bottle remained whole. Wine was leaking through the fracture that completely crossed the punt. Upon even further inspection, after decanting the rest of the wine, I discovered dried seepage on the labels at a couple of the fracture sites, and identified the point of impact that must have caused the problem. The interesting part is that this wine was stored in my cellar for 2 years, likely in this condition and the wine still drank well and had a fine nose. I don't think my rating was low due to this, as I did not detect any oxidation or other ill nature that was not part of the original. However, it is a bit disconcerting that my rating of a previous bottle was significantly higher.

March 14, 2013 - First night this wine was a bit harsh and tannins were untamed. However, on the second night the fruit was front and center, the harshness was gone and the tannins had smoothed out and became complementary to the overall package; a very pleasant discovery. I guess wine needs more time in the bottle or a lot of air time after opening.

February 14, 2012 - consistent notes with my bottle of 2 years ago. This is absolutely at peak right now and it's clear it's not going to be anything great, but still, it's a very nice drop at the moment that will benefit from an hour or so of aeration in decanter. Sensibly full-bodied, good acidity, med + finish, but lacks complexity. A solid sense of place and time. My last bottle. Drink thru 2015, 14,5% abv, score: B+

September 11, 2010 - Nose - fruity, roses, based on the nose my guess is this will be extracted
Mouth - again good dark fruit, somewhat closed, tannic, needs time.

March 25, 2010 - Decanted for sediment, slow-ox for 1 hour, decanted for 2 hours. Medium toward dark ruby core with a nose of raspberry, cherry, galets and scorched earth. This wine did a near 180 during the 3 hours it was open, going from full-bodied tannic monster that was hot, disjointed and sour on the palate to a super balanced and neatly composed medium bodied effort that spoke well of the growing area. Approx $34, drink thru 2015, 14,5% abv.
