March 18, 2009 - Sight: Slightly cloufy with a mild rose color, bricking was there but far less than I would have expected for a wine of this age.

Nose: Sour fruits with some straw, raspberry, and earth notes. As the wine opened in the glass, a pleasant amount of fruits emerged forward. Some in-and-out wisps of strawberries and cream.

Palate: Initial taste was slightly "off" in nature. Fruit dying down. Plummy aspects in a soft and plush wine. Virtually not tannins at this point. Blackberries made a strong presence here. Some supporting acid structure was realized and then the wine began to evolve. Dried fruits and some more minor notes of dried herbs. Some oak notes were still viable and very old leather notes emerged. Also coming in the home stretch was some spice box notes with peppery aspects. For some reason - the tannins seemed to strengthen a little in the glass making the wine more enoyable.

Overall: I think that having a bottle of wine this old is somewhat ceremonial and a special event - even if the wine is not great, as long as it is intact and good. This bottle was consumed at a restaurant with no prior decanting. The reason for this is that the wine was so old, the thought was that it would fall apart if decanted. Upon removing the lead capsule, one could notice the mold on top of the cork. The cork did not disintegrate, but it was thoroughly soaked and basically came out in pieces. The fill of the bottle was very impressive - better than base neck - almost mid neck. The wine is past its prime, but yet still very enjoyable and quite a novelty at the table in a restaurant. 88 points.
