January 12, 2019 - The cork was in pretty good shape for having lived within this bottle for 40+ years. The fill was only slightly diminished from the bottom of that cork.

After having been decanted, the wine at first taste was peculiarly astringent, and that bitterness masked any fruit. I suspected that this might be a temporary flaw, and so it proved to be. This wonderful wine even gave the illusion of becoming more dense in color (from pale, almost yellowish during decanting to a Bordeaux-like, solid red during the three-hour dinner, where it was served--and itself served brilliantly--a baked leg of lamb, boneless, rolled in a mixture of sausage and prosciutto and herbs, covered in dough and baked, with Marsala wine drizzled in throughout baking.

February 4, 2017 - 2012 Barolo: Grace Under Pressure Masterclass (Del Posto Restaurant, NYC): [Shared by Antonio at lunch.] Only a hint of what it once was. Dried out and OTH. But there is a prettiness to it as well. Hard to shift gears this far after tasting all those 2012's.

Autumnal, with soy, red fruits, and decaying leaves. I don’t want it to sound tired, as there is a sweetness to the fruit and a lovely palate presence, along with more savory notes of cured meat and porcini. The acidity adds to a mouthwatering sense to the wine. I like it, others may not. Mature and starting to fade. I enjoy drinking wines in this phase of life, but it is on the back end. A lovely fading wine. 89

January 31, 2017 - Still young and dense, required one hour of airtime to open. Slight VA initially. Black cherry, licorice, spice and a vibrant finish. 96+

December 7, 2013 - Ninth Annual White Truffle Dinner (Chez Weber - Chicago IL): Truly sensational in every way. Lots of mature red fruit with great spice and modest floral notes. So much finesse, this kept showing additional textures and nuances through long, long finish. Wine of the Night. Last few ounces were still sensational the next night.
