Community Tasting Notes 4

December 20, 2017 - A classic GSM blend made from biodynamically farmed grapes. 80% of the wine aged in demi-muids, 20% in cement vats. 14,5% alcohol. Tasted blind.

Very opaque and still very youthful, almost purple-hued ruby-red color, even after 11 years, with a pale raspberry-red rim. Very dark-toned, heavy and brooding nose with really fruit-forward aromas, having a distinctively cassis-driven note on the fore, giving the wine very Chilean Cab kind of nose. Beside that blackcurrant note there are aromas of ripe, sunny dark fruits, some rusted character and lighter hints of sweeter red berries. The wine is full-bodied, ripe and quite dense on the palate with intense and rather opulent flavors of blackcurrants, sunny dark fruits, some brambly blackberries, a hint of strawberry jam and a touch of peppery spice. Although very ripe, the wine still comes across as more savory than sweet. The acidity feels medium-to-moderate whereas the tannins are still pretty much to the fore, giving the wine very firm, chewy and grippy character. The finish is long, warm and quite tannic with intense and somewhat developed flavors of ripe blackcurrants, some aged raisiny fruit, a little bit of ripe dark plummy fruit and a hint of stemmy greenness.

An impressive, big and concentrated take on the Côtes du Rhône style that reminds me a lot of the heavier wines of Châteauneuf-du-Pape or Gigondas, yet the wine shows much more elegance and sophistication than a great majority of them. However, the biggest surprise here was that cassis note that really threw me off and made me think of some Cabernet-driven wines, effectively keeping my guesses well outside the Rhône region - I never thought of this as a Rhône wine. Overall a good and pretty ripe wine with a lot of power and oomph. Still a lot to go before the peak. Although drinking nicely now, expect the score to go up as the wine ages.

March 29, 2012 - I can't believe that I am the only one opening these beauties? It is all there ready for you to enjoy. I really like these 2006s. This is like a pure 'atmosferic' 4.2 L sportscar. Lots of power and fruit, but no turbocharger as in 2007 (and expected for 09). The more I drink this, the more I find it the better wine. The balance is better and the heat is not half as present. Dink now and the following 5 years I would say.

May 8, 2011 - brilliant. This wine never disappoints. Still primary, but the intensity (and tension) of the fruit is already excellent

September 19, 2009 - way too young, but already a great wine; beautiful southern rhone expression; true to the Richaud style. Lots of reglisse. Wait 3 years before opening another.
