March 28, 2010 - Label: In 1865, John G. Ray, a retired sea captain, opened Ray's Station Tavern amid the remote mountains of what is now Northern California's wine country. John was a no-frills guy and his Station was a local legend for its rugged no-nonsense hospitality. Libations flowed, the food was filling and the accommodations were rustic at best.

Ray's Station Cabernet Sauvignon is complex and broad-shouldered, not unlike the famed sea captain himself, with ripe dark fruit and undertones of vanilla spice.

Review: About 46% of the grapes in this wine come from Napa Valley, the other percentages are scattered amongst Alexander Valley, Lake County, Rutherford, Oak Knoll and Dry Creek. This 2006 is a blend of 95% Cabernet Sauvignon, 2% Cabernet Franc, 1% Petite Sirah, 1% Petite Verdot, 1% Merlot. Deep garnet color. 14.5% Alcohol. I get aromas of black cherry and tobacco, subtle earth, vanilla and earl grey tea with a hint of asparagus. Flavors of warm cherry vanilla cola meets plum pudding. Heavy on the oak and heat on the back of the palate. High and Dry tannins.

March 5, 2010 - This is pretty awful stuff. Shows a lot of sweetness.

January 7, 2009 - This was better on the second day. The first, I would have never guessed this was cab. Too light, reddish fruit, higher acidity, and a fair amount of glycerin would make me think more of a cheap Rhone blend. It rounded out and took on a little more cab character the second day with darker fruit and less prominent acidity. At $15, I wouldn't seek this out.
