October 15, 2014 - In a beautiful stage. Mellowed tannins, full mouthfeel, green pepper in a good way. Really nice expression of cab franc.

January 10, 2013 - Pop&pour, 1hr in: Ruby red. Rose, currant, wet hay and granite on the nose. Bright red fruit, lightly grippy tannins and medium long finish of rhubarb, thyme and lavender.

January 21, 2012 - Dark ruby color. Very prominent classic aroma of green peppers. Medium body, very well balanced. Good length and pleasant finish.

November 5, 2011 - High quality serious Loire Franc. Opens with barnyard funk and jalapeno, then transitions into tobacco, violet and red fruits--cranberry, pomegranate, cherry. That savory green edge of Chinon is right where it should be. Fairly dense for a Chinon, med/high acidity, tannins a bit chewy even. Finishes long with tart red fruits and veggie. Great combo of finesse, rusticity and typicity. Should age further--tannins are accessible but not resolved.

April 3, 2011 - Aerate to decanter, serve. Color is medium red saturated with a lot of dark hues that make it surprisingly dark overall. Initial bouquet is taut with concentrated raspberries, bramble, touch of cedar, and mild manure funk that dissipates within an hour. On the palate we have concentrated red berries surrounded by broccoli rabe and some bitter herbs, stretching into raspberries and darker cherries intermixed with some spoonfuls of dry earth. Extended finish of minerals, bitter herb, red seed fruits, and dusty cocoa powder giving it a more extracted texture (88). Medium-plus acid and medium-plus level of tannins are still quite firm. 2011 is supposedly the end of the drinking window for this, but in fact this could use perhaps another year for the tannins to integrate and begin to enter its peak. I let 90% of the bottle stand in closed decanter overnight and enjoyed it more on day 2 (90). The bouquet is more open with darker concentrated raspberries and blackberries, along with the aforementioned herbs and refreshing notes of green veggie. Flavors are concentrated and the profile is food-friendly. Day 3 the fruit has faded, earth and herbs predominate, and the tannins are again more noticeable. Overall a youthful Chinon with excellent quality of fruit, very good typicity. No regrets for the 22 USD tag.

(Jean-Maurice Raffault Chinon Clos des Capucins) #3; VaynerPAZZZ; COLOR-dark; NOSE-a little tight, but pretty stinky; manure action; like a pig farted; smoky and gamey; PALATE-a little thinner on the attack; a little disjointed and off for me; this is one dimensional for me; the tannins are a little bitter and hollow on the mid-palate; WS-92; GV-87
