September 25, 2016 - This was the oldest wine I have ever had the pleasure of enjoying. While I had carefully stored this wine for the majority of its 35 years of existence, you never really know if it survived the aging process to be a beautifully, well aged prize or nothing more that some expensive vinegar. As I carefully uncorked this beauty, I was happy to find that the cork was fully intact and there were no signs of any veins allowing too much O2 to enter the bottle. The next test was decanting. As I carefully poured out the wine I discovered a nice Ruby color with just some brick color around the rim of the wine. Not surprisingly, the fruit was entirely absent from the nose, replaced with just a very subtle mineral and mushroom. Ahhhhh, finally to the taste. It is just amazing to me how much a quality aged wine will lose all its roughness leaving only a very soft and subtle wine to drink. With all the winemaking technology we have today, the taste and character of a well aged wine cannot me manufactured. Only time and proper cellaring can produce this result.

I'm really not sure how to score this as it is so different than wines much younger so I'm going 90 just for surviving 35 years and one more for each one of us because we really liked it.

November 7, 2000 - Christie's Pre-Sale Tasting (Amsterdam): Supple, more rounded than the 1978 at this stage.

May 15, 1996 - Nice and mature bouquet with still some cassis and a light dose of oak. Same in the taste. The wine is mature and the tannin is not tired yet. Some complexity. Medium to long finish.
