April 29, 2016 - "No great wines, just great bottles" - a saying that has proven itself again with this one.
Opened this with an expectation I might have to send it down the drain. Don't know how I lost track of it, but figured it was probably over the hill.
Wrong. Light golden in color. Honeyed aromatics on the nose with a whiff of minerality. On the palate, rich and smooth. Surprised by the acidity, which while largely integrated is still distinguishable and gives both lift and complexity. Slightly off-dry. Good length of finish, though with a dryness that sure seems like a hint of tannin.
Easily the best and most memorable $8 bottle of wine I've ever had. -

April 29, 2015 - Still very good. Nice complexity for a sweeter white.

11/6/2009 (link)(WINZER KREMS Gruner Sandgrube 13) $7.99 Dear Friends, We've had a bunch of expensive wines lately so how about this? $7.99 for a nervous bottle of Gruner Veltliner that is normally $20 or more. I believe this wine received 89 pts from the Wine Spectator (I don't have my laptop this morning) and the "89" is the reason for this bizarre deal. One more point and it's $20 but now it's $7.99? Don't get me started on the relative absurdity of the above equation but it's a buyers market right now and you are the beneficiary. As an everyday wine of terroir (or for a holiday gathering of 100 wine know-it-alls) you could probably do a lot worse. Intellectual wedding reception wine? This parcel is from a perfectly stored cache of Winzer Krems and while I know very little about this wine (I've never seen or tasted a bottle), I'm sure your $7.99 will be well-served with its acquisition. 2007 Winzer Krems Sandgrube 13 Gruner Veltliner Thank you, Jon Rimmerman Garagiste Seattle, WA Austr6430
