December 21, 2023 - Tasted blind side by side the Sin Qua Non 2012. While this bottle lacked the lush ripe fruit that the SQN still had, it was actually the preferred bottle, especially as it opened up and joined the meal. This was more mineral driven with balanced acids complementing the meats. Nice depth of flavors and the finish was long and smooth.

Of course it's not an entirely fair comparison as many of the SQN'ers will be quick to point out. The Renaissance is 7 years older, was really made to age (where as the SQN is styled for "nearer term") and of course was SIGNIFICANTLY less expensive (uh, about 1/5th!) so how could it possibly be compared. My SQN friends believe that SQNs should only be compared to other comparably (over) priced wines and that I have done both wineries a grave injustice by putting them side by side. And I agree. Next time I open a SQN I'll look for a wine that costs as much, not necessarily one that tastes better.......

May 16, 2023 - Great wine, slow ox for 3hrs prior to drinking. Definitely needed some air. Aromas of smoked meats, black plums and olives, tobacco, violet, and spent coffee grounds, some real earthy-animal elements in there, the nose is expressive and intense, a great representation of CA emulating the Northern Rhone. Palate follows suit, full body, big tannin and acid, alcohol is well hidden, finish has a tart mineral streak to it. I think another 5+ years would have a positive impact on the wine (possibly more), though it is drinking really well right now. Great stuff.

January 25, 2023 - Quite nice Reminds me of the north Rhône. Savory rather than fruity. A real treat.

January 18, 2023 - More towards secondary and tertiary tones at this stage: iron, leather, bark, brick dust. The bright mountain fruit is an echo. Still quite enjoyable.

October 30, 2022 - Brought by Clare. Decanted off sediment for >3h then back into bottle. Aromas of game meats, a bit of volatile acids, blackberries and cherries, brambles, and olives. Palate with tart cherries and dark blackberries, raosted meats, herbs, and minerals. Full body with prominent tannins. The wine is lively from the nice acids with excellent depth. It still has so much stuffing. A bit more harmonious than when last opened 2 years ago. Still has more room to evolve. I think this wine can go another 10 years or more without too much trouble. 93+
