February 20, 2020 - I much prefer the more classic Felsina CCR for 1/2 the $45 price. Rancia is a more modern approach to chianti and aged in new barriques which IMO, unnecessarily, masks that beautiful varietal character until you age it enough for the oak to meld as it mostly has at age 14. Found this fairly docile and open upon opening so I simply slowed oxed in btl and glass for nearly 3 hour prior to Nita's homemade pizza. Semi opaque ruby red color. Aromas of berries and garrigue. This has much improved and may finally show slightly more depth then the basic CC but it comes with more oak influence and some Cabernet like chocolate. Still, all in all, very enjoyable; minerality, mostly red fruit, underbrush and spice. I like it, still don't get the point of paying up for chianti aged in new oak though and haven't bought any since this vintage. CT says I have 2 more but pretty sure I only have1 left. No hurry to drink up and may wait till its 20th?

February 20, 2020 - Mature aromas of mineral and leather, with black cherry and plum, with a mouth full of powerful fruit, blackberry and cherries, with acids still quite bright and tannins surprisingly young and firm, slightly drying.

This is a pretty classic Chianti with at least a few more years of positive evolution. Should drink well for a decade.

February 11, 2020 - Coravin sample, allowed to breath in the glass.
Best in the second hour with food (in this case it was chicken).
Still tannic and will probably continue to evolve for a few more years.

February 8, 2020 - Dark red in color. Very reticent nose shows crushed dark-red berries, graphite, soil tones, licorice and hint of violets. Full-medium bodied on the palate shows dusty and dark red cherries, chalk, still a hint of tannins/oak, medium acidity and a decent savory finish. This bottle is not as charming as the last one opened 4 years ago. Will wait another 4+ tears to open the next bottle.

(Felsina Berardenga Rancia Chianti Classico Riserva) Tasted at the rather over-priced Mirabelle restuarant in Rome. Despite being served by a tastevin-wearing sommelier, this young and oaky wine (a problem with restaurant lists, especially one such as this which focuses only on grand labels, omitting more affordable bottles which would probably drink better now) was - to my surprise and disappointment - not even decanted. With some time it does display touches of cranberry fruit and bitter chocolate, but the smoky oak still dominates. The palate is nicely structured, mildly austere in terms of acid backbone and middleweight substance, but it is very typical of the appellation and it is perfect with food. A ripe and mild-mannered tannic backbone. Overall, too young to give real pleasure now, but will be superb in five years (and the rest).
