July 1, 2021 - meh... decent darkish red fruit, good acidity, but somehow it didn't tickle my nerve in any way... easy and comfortable drinking at this point, and feels like it can stay at this level for a fairly long time (7 yrs? 10 yrs?)

    April 7, 2021 - 1/3, excellent cork.
Pale/medium garnet core, wide pale rim.
Quite youthful nose, red fruited, principally raspberries, lightly floral, cinnamon notes. Complex and attractive. Light/medium bodied, elegant, red fruits, lightly spiced, a touch of game too, very fine but still lightly firm tannin, fresh acidity, decent length finish. Composed, elegant, lovely - no hurry here.

January 3, 2021 - very nice, debated about 91 pts due to its lighter-side body, good volnay and Montille typicity with some red fruit, good acidity / lift, and light to moderate spices... just a little light / muted (this bottle at least)... if same character but with "the volume turned up" this could have garnered 93 or 94 pts

September 17, 2016 - Decanted for 1-2 hours and served with grilled salmon and burgers. I normally love this producer; however, given the vintage and now a bit of bottle age, I was expecting more. I didn't find flaws per se, but it was muted on the nose and a tad tart in the mouth. Bottle and cork seemed in perfect condition. Decent balance and length, just not the pleasure I have come to expect from 1er volnay. Perhaps my grading curve is harsh? (My guests really seemed to enjoy the wine.)

August 23, 2013 - I took my first bottle of this to a rather boozy dinner and it got slightly lost amidst the shouty atmosphere which saw a 1999 Cote Rotie Les Roziers proclaimed as the WOTN. The Rhone wine was wonderful but rather indicative of the sort of style that would garner attention on the night. Coming back to the second bottle in the relative tranquillity of my own home it was clear how much everyone was missing. I was able to give it my full attention, which a wine of this elegance and subtle charms not only requires but deserves (my wife having opted to drink not just lager but Stella Artois after a long day with my two young sons - the bank holiday weekend threatens to be a long one). There is noticeable oak on the nose initially but it never threatens to overwhelm the other notes. The rest of the experience is an unmitigated joy. After a few hours the fruit really starts to come through after the more earthy, briary flavours dominate at first. It has a beguiling lack of weight but is by no means lightweight; instead it has beautiful balance and a lovely restrained style. Clearly I'm a fan.
