March 15, 2024 - Friday Group Brown Bag Tasting (R&R's): Blind. A good bit of bricking hints at an older wine. A bouillon cube aroma dominates the red fruit undertones. Flavors of dried herbs and ripe, plummy fruit on the palate. The bouillon note is a bit distracting. This bottle has not held up as well as we had hoped it might.

This had been double decanted two hours before the flight was poured and there was no hint that this would have shown the way it did- in fact it seemed it would have needed the air to wake up and reveal itself- I fully expected a lovely bottle by the time we got to the tasting. Oh well...win some, lose some.

October 20, 2023 - With Jeroen and Isobel, brought this to DeLorenzo's Tomato Pies (a NJ classic). Last bottle from a batch purchsed from Garagiste circe 2009. Decanted and rebottled about 3 hours before drinking.

Notes from 2020: "Nose showing dark cherry, savory, vanilla oak, cedar. Aromas jumped out during the decant. Palate of dark fruits, blackberry, currant, baking spice. Perfumed secondary notes. Medium weight, smooth texture."

This showing had more pronounced blue and dark fruits, blueberry/blackberry and currants. Rich texture and good persistence through the mid palate. Considerably better after the decant - which would be consistent with Randy Dunn wines from Napa. Tight when first opened this was really showing after 3 hours.

Excellent wine and a great spot right now. Staying with Dunn tradition of long lived wines this will still go a while. Its outstanding now - no reason to wait IMO

January 1, 2022 - Should not have waited this long, a few years past it’s prime.

(Long Shadows Wineries Cabernet Sauvignon Feather) Very dark red violet color; oak, mocha, roasted plum nose; roasted plum, currant, oak, mocha palate, like a modern-style Bordeaux; medium-plus finish

(Feather) Box Dear Friends, Long Shadows has received a heap of critical praise lately, mostly for their top 2005 and 2006 portfolio, and we've been offered a few limited wood boxes of the Vintner's Collection (2006) - almost all of these were offered as "winery only" packs but a few have been handed around to retail in the immediate area (as far as I know, none of the packs made it outside of the NW - the winery is already completely sold out of all the 2006's so this is the last of the vintage - they are moving on to 2007 for the red wines). This is a great way to get a feel for this detailed and modern Washington State winery at a price that is below market for each item. Long Shadows has the highest aspirations for all of their wines and they will not be satisfied until their stable is considered the best of its type in the US. Considering the recent acclaim and relative obscurity of these 6-packs, this is a bargain at the mid-upper end (today's Tanzer will only add fuel to the fire - none of the wines in the portfolio received less than 90pts). A wood box was specially made for this set - it is handsomely etched and would be a terrific gift for someone special that enjoys the finest high-impact/fussed over domestic wines. Inside each pack you will receive: 1 - 2006 Pirouette 1 - 2006 Feather 1 - 2006 Pedestal 1 - 2006 Sequel 1 - 2006 Saggi 1 - 2005 Chester-Kidder (CK is always released late, thus the 2005, which was a behemoth vintage in Twice Walla) This is a one-time offer - the winery is giving us approximately 14 hours from now (seriously - 9:00am tomorrow) to take possession of the lot or they are going into their library for release a decade down the road: Long Shadows Vintner's Collection LIMITED wood 6-pack (focus: 2006) Thank you, Jon Rimmerman Garagiste Seattle, WA WA9970

(Feather) Feather Dear Friends, The word on the street is that this is Randy Dunn's best wine in years and it's supposedly one of the finest Long Shadows entrants to date. While most assumed 2005 would provide that material, in true Dunn fashion, his 2005 Feather may actually be too tannic (behind the wall of grapey fruit). The 2006, by contrast, pulls more from the soul - it is more about a complete picture and a balanced whole rather than just the rugged mountain tannins and gritty fruit that Randy has made a signature throughout his storied career. If the winery is correct, the 2006 Feather will be their most admired wine since they began assembling their contingent of winemakers from around the world seven years ago. Not only is this wine 100% Cabernet Sauvignon (something that has become a relative rarity in a Cabernet world full of dollops of this and that) but its sifted style sets it apart form past years - instead of a rough and tumble "wild west" character, the 2006 Feather has more sultry Cabernet fruit with loads of cashmere tannin in reserve. The potential and material has always been there for past vintages of this wine but, if you add a touch of the understated and a dash of breed to the pedigree, you are in for something top-flight. While the 2006 Feather has the very highest aspirations, its strength lies in its desire to underwhelm rather than overwhelm. Don't get the wrong idea - the wine is certainly at no loss of deep-toned fruit, it is simply not as blueberry obvious as some of the past examples from this winery. The combination of a more even-keeled vintage and a lighter tannic approach married to a dense mouthful of noble Cabernet should make the yin-yang of the 2006 Feather very appealing to those searching for a feminine/masculine rendition of the king of grapes. In my opinion, this wine would be an excellent blind tasting candidate for a Napa/Sonoma Cabernet retrospective 10 years from now. The other bonus is that the price is down slightly on the 2006 which makes the Feather somewhat moderate in price (well, moderate by domestic standards).
