May 6, 2023 - Opened it blind for wine friends - wine from my birth year. Everyone’s guesses hovered around 1998-2001… it evolved in the glass really nicely, didn’t break down at all. Bottle was opened 45 minutes earlier and left to breathe. Nose of rope red fruit, hint of mushroom, rose petals. On the palate soft tannins, nice acidity and velvety texture. Notes pf plums, candied red cherries, bacon fat, orange zest. Medium length, super elegant. You really can’t beat Giacomo Conterno, this is a feat of stellar winemaking.

September 4, 2022 - (Mostly) Spanish dinner (Chicago, IL): This didn't seem close to the bottle of this at the white truffle dinner last year -- the nose was completely overrun by pyrazines and the palate never really got to fill out. Perhaps it was a matter of not getting enough aeration?

November 13, 2021 - White Truffles & Nebbiolo - 2021 Edition (Chicago, IL): Exceptional and wine of the flight. Hours of air is necessary to show the plush, pure and bright cherry fruit. So much dried floral and spice with hints of leather and tar. Bright, crystalline fruit.

November 13, 2021 - Nebbiolos, white truffles, Volume VI (Chicago, IL): On the pop and pour, this was weedy, thin, and stinky. Wholly unimpressive, I was concerned I'd need to open a backup bottle. I decanted this for a few hours and it had drastically changed, leaving the room where I had left the decanter filled with a lovely floral perfume with just a hint of balsamic. On the palate, this showed plenty of fruit and sweetness with surprising potency, even at this age. The air/time allowed the wine to lose most of the stinky elements; by service, this was clean as a whistle.

April 25, 2020 - There are no great wines but great bottles. This adage applies to Giacomo Conterno barolos as my success rate is around 50%. Beautiful ruby with fading rim. With an hour of air, sweet subtle red fruit, strawberry jam, dry cherry, leather, sous bois, tar, strong iron, cumin, tea, soy, caramel and earth. Very good concentration, finely layered subtle red fruit, silky and fluid, beautiful balance and harmony, and a seamless long sweet red fruit driven finish with strong iron and cumin at the end. This is a very complete wine, strong Conterno iron, pleasant surprise.
