Community Tasting Notes 21

June 23, 2023 - I have had 2 of these since 2011, from B-21 and this is my first note. WOW, what a buy at $10! Nose of fruit, some baking spices, faint barnyard, amazing dark, bright color with no apparent bricking. Soft tannin on the palate, with mouth coating repeat of my nose impressions, fairly long finish. Sorry to apparently have only one left in the cellar.

September 14, 2020 - Bought 2b from B21 for 10/b 9 years ago; this is #1. Solid cork. Decanted with normal sediment for its age. Dark purple; mature red berries, some garrigue, that persisted on the palate; very good mouthfeel. Almost delicious, good on the Rhone character, wish I had more than one left. Stored horizontally in a cool, dark basement since purchase. My evaluation: For me, scores on a "100-point scale" are misleading. I use a 4-category scale (perhaps with +/-)--not including flawed--which runs outstanding/notable/drinkable/poor. This is notable+ when considering quality, age, and price.

December 6, 2016 - One of the intricacies of wines is that a powerful upfront taste can be a stage curtain that hides what is behind it. The most common case of this is that massive tannin can hide the fruit. This is one of the wines where the reverse is true - the fruit of the released wine was so intense that it overwhelmed the tannin. Now the massive fruit has begun to subside, resulting in the wine tasting more tannic than ever before. Still opaque, but with more red tones. Still deliciously fruity, but now the tannin shares the center stage with fruit, and the once lush and velvety texture has become somewhat firmer, dryer, and more acidic. Overall, a strong candidate for the greatest Cote du Rhone from the great 2007 vintage, that remains eminently enjoyable 9 years old.

August 31, 2016 - Amazingly ageworthy, continually improving every year. Opaque black with an inch pour, zero brick, colored right to the edge. Delightful mix of blackberry, blueberry, and cherry. Smooth and caressing, and refreshingly acidic, with nothing hard edged or harsh. The mouth remains juicy throughout the taste. No sign of any deterioration now or on its way. Concentrated, dense, complex, silky, endlessly delicious, and alas, our next to last bottle. One of the greatest $14 wines we have ever owned.

September 7, 2015 - This is the wine that originally convinced us that the 2007 vintage was a great one in the southern Rhone. We attended a large southern Rhone tasting where this wine was at the first table. When we finished tasting through all the wines, including bottles over $60, this under $15 wine is the first one we went back to retaste. Could it possibly be as rich, complex, and deep as the expensive ones? The answer was absolutely yes, and even if the answer was sometimes no, not quite, it was still 85% as good as wines four times as expensive. We bought it then, and over the next year, re-bought it, including a full case, as our go-to wine any other would have to beat for us to purchase it. And now, 8 years after the time its grapes were harvested, we are down to last 2 bottles. And the final evaluation is - we should have bought another full case. One of the few wines we have that was great every single time we drank it. From a vineyard right beside Chateauneuf du Pape, covered with the same large round stones.
