Community Tasting Notes 2

February 5, 2010 - I've had an unusual amount of bottle variation with this. One bottle was bland and lifeless; not flawed or bad, but nothing really going on. Another bottle was very good, with ripe red and black fruit, smooth tannin and good acidity; not complex, but very enjoyable. Yet another bottle was very good on the first night and totally dead on the second. I bought a case of this on release based on my excellent experience with the 2002 version of this wine and the RP90 review, but I wish I'd passed. Score represents the rough average of the bottles I've had.

August 8, 2009 - Drank over the course of two days, and afterward I still wasn't quite sure what to make of it. Respi-aerate to decanter and serve. Color atypically dark and dirty purple with perhaps some red hues, but not obvious. Nose of dark fruit (plum and cherry mix?), cedar, tobacco, and each time I come back to the glass fresh, a wafting alcohol floater. Big fruit of earthy red cherries (not sweet), sour cherries, and currants intermixed with licorice on the palate. An extended dry finish of black and red currants with cigarette tobacco and at times some grapey alcohol. Medium-plus acid, and high tannins that are firm and clamp down much of the back end. Ordinarily I am a fan of Montepulciano, but the profile to this brawny wine seemed atypical and not particularly enjoyable, even with food. It was somewhat better on day 2 in terms of the tannins being more relaxed. RP90?
