September 21, 2023 - In memoriam Bordeaux tasting for Piet Kuiper (@ RvD): Deep bouquet with dark berries, some stable and savory smells and well dosed oak. Same on the palate, a bit rustic, juicy dark berries and good acidity and tannin. Also savory. The wine is in its maturity stage and there is potential for a few more years. Beautiful wine.

August 29, 2022 - A much more floral bouquet than the Chevalier 08 tasted alongside, with roses and violets to the fore, then some blackberry and herbs. The attack is muted compared to the Chevalier, with subtle notes of blackberry and blackcurrant, before a sweet vein of strawberry and dark cherry midpalate and hints of tannins before the long, dusty finish so typical of Giscours.

Giscours doesn’t always do well in “off” vintages but this is a good one, much better than 02, 03 or 04 for example. It’s not the best Giscours ever, but I loved the restraint and subtlety.

February 19, 2022 - Nice wine. Aging well. Big ruby red with nice nose. Lacks a bit of body of the higher rated wines.

    December 31, 2021 - 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot

Medium body, deep garnet color. Delicate but ripe black and blue fruits aroma complemented by cedar wood and spices’ box. Complex palate of black currant and plum, following by earthy notes and lingering licorice but juicy finish. Charm, harmonies and perfectly balanced, vital acidity and well integrated tannins. Food friendly, well pairing to grilled duck stuffed by rice. Serve 18ºC - 20ºC. Open one hour ahead, next day after vacuum corking even better. Drink now and next six/eight years, perhaps longer

April 4, 2021 - Solid but unspectacular. Decanted for 4 hours which may have been too long as the wonderful, exotic nose on opening had largely subsided on drinking. Of the two bottles drunk one had considerably more pronounced and finer tannins than the other. No upside whatsoever to holding for longer - this is now as good as it will get - but I should think it’s got a further decade ahead of it.

(Château Giscours) Barrel sample tasted at the château on July 1, 2009. “One of the longest harvests we have had, because we had a wonderful Indian summer,” explains Van Beek. Backward and primary on the nose, it has a much denser and richer construction than its neighbor du Tertre, with more apparent tannin because of, among other things, its higher Cabernet content (65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, and 5% Cabernet Franc). But it is still elegant and velvety in the Margaux style. Drink from 2015 to 2025 and later. Winery Spotlight: Château Giscours
