August 7, 2018 - This is my 1000th tasting note on Cellar Tracker, so I'm glad it is something decent! Served in magnum by our hosts for lunch, to accompany barbecued leg of lamb. Wine Advocate says that, to celebrate the winery's 150th anniversary, Murrieta produced 3,500 magnums of the 2000 Mazuelo (made from the grape of the same name). It spent 24 months aging, including 6 months in new American oak and 6 months in new French oak. It goes on to say that this Pomerol-styled Rioja should drink well for 20+ years, so we are perfectly within this range. This bottle had also been stored well, so that will have helped ensure its longevity. Opened by our hosts about 4 hours before tasting. The colour is dark ruby, with browning on the edges. There is still a good amount of fruit present on the nose, with leather and treacle also evident. On the palate, it appears fully mature, silky smooth, with damsons, plums, all present. It also has a good length. Four of us had no trouble finishing the magnum! Overall, a really good wine and a pleasure to be able to taste it. I also think it's a worthy wine to fulfil my 1000th Cellar Tracker review.

Uncoiled somewhat to express some nice spice and dark fruits, but fairly monolithic and flat. Oak notes also intrude and the wine feels too pulled. Carignan (Mazuelo here) is being expressed here, but there is a too heavy hand on top. Not unenjoyable as taken to an outdoor party and late at night.
