January 10, 2017 - If anyone has doubts that a Virginia wine "can't hang" after 10 years in the cellar - this wine shouts "in your face!" This could easily last another 5-7 years or more. Oak is still prominent but not overwhelming. Secondary malo is there without imparting a sickening butteriness. Lingering and complex length and finish. Wish I had another bottle to try in another 5-7 years. I find it fascinating.

Whether the pairing could be off or this is an off bottle, I couldn’t say. But what is certain is that the alcohol was out of balance giving the wine far too much heat in the mid-palate and finish. The attack has plenty of lemon, tangerine, apple and pear, but from there the alcohol dominates the everything that follows, including the vanilla, chalk and toast. While the alcohol is not at all high in the wine (13.7%), it takes hold and doesn’t let up. With cider-sage cream sauce ravioli. Not a particularly strong pairing. Recommended with reservations.
