  December 29, 2023 - Still somewhat blocky from very aggressive saigné, but deep, dark fruits typical of Mazis, even if not terribly precise. Should continue at this level for some time, maybe even gain a little finesse. Cellared since original release.

  September 5, 2020 - Full blood / brick color. Rustic and old-school. Lots of earth and wet tobacco on the nose. The palate is both mature and filled with the vintage’s acidity. Rustic and rough - can feel it on your teeth. Does well with food. Interesting to drink but could not do it often. (88)

The core of this is the screaming 1996 acidity, which gives more of the backbone than the moderate remaining tannins. Earth throughout. Rather old fashioned, uncompromising Gevrey which has inched forward over the years and improved, if ever so grudgingly.   This held up very well overnight. All of that acidity keeps things fresh, and it even gained some breadth.

  October 3, 2018 - Surprisingly deep ruby. Very Gevrey soil, anise, and black fruit nose. Not a big wine but good roundness for a '96 with the usual lashing of strong acidity. This came across as relatively young and unevolved and was the best bottle of this I've had by a good margin. This is probably an example of the vintage needing a ton of time to unwind and become less austere. Excellent tonight with room to improve.

  November 20, 2017 - This is serious, old school Burgundy. A decent showing for a wine that has demonstrated significant bottle variation. The nose is dark Pinot fruit, earth, iron and celery salt. Opened mid-morning, it still shows a rough and tumble side - prominent acid, noticeable wood tannin (though softening) and some lovely maturing fruit goodness. This needs rich food. Stay away if you don’t like wines from the previous eras - nothing easy or lush here. I like but don’t love. Will continue to hold other bottles to see what happens. The fruit that is there is terrific. (87+?)
