Community Tasting Notes 10

July 14, 2013 - Popped and poured. Spice aromas, dominated by mint. Complex, evolving flavor mix - earth, red fruit, among others. A hint of green pepper that either comes from the wine, or from my imagination since I know this is a Cab Franc. Rich finish of berry and plum fruit with firm acid underneath.

This is absolutely wonderful, is in its prime, and is drinking beautifully right now. Blind, I would have guessed Chinon.

September 8, 2011 - Probably the best Cab Franc I've had from the Finger Lakes. Nice Cab Franc Nose, and ample fruit to balance the vegetal notes expected from cool climate Cab Franc. Good acidity begets a nice finish. Perhaps in a good year like 2007, Finger lakes Cab Franc can hold its own with the Loire Valley.

August 15, 2010 - One of the better finger lakes red we've had. Medium dark color, not bright. Nice nose of red and blue fruit and some barnyard. Medium weight, a little soft but with some grip. Nice berries, full if not dense, and some spice. Not alot of varietal character, but balanced enough for drinking with or without food. No QPR at its retail price, like most FL reds which are generally poor value.

August 6, 2010 - Raspberry, dark cherry and light smoke in the nose. Palate is warm and ethereal. Ripe, dark raspberry flavors with notes of cranberry reduction are layered over a palate with dense, fine tannins and an elegantly warm balance.

April 4, 2010 - Light tart fruit with little mid palate or finish that is craving ripeness. I dont see the appeal here. I guess it would be fine with simple food. A basic Chinon from a so so vintage and a bad Euro/dollar conversion is still a better buy.

New York Cork Report

  • By Lenn Thompson
    2/23/2010 (link) 3.5 out of 5 stars

(Ravines Wine Cellars Cabernet Franc Finger Lakes) Greets the nose with ripe red raspberry and red cherry aromas accented by briar, lightly grilled herbs and earthy tobacco leaf notes. More of that rich red fruit leads the way on the well-balanced, medium-bodied palate, which features soft, well-incorporated tannins and good acidity. Secondary flavors of tobacco leaf, herbs and briar are subtle, but bring a bit of complexity to that core of almost-sweet fruit. The finish is long and mineral-tinged. Open for several hours, the herbal and earth note emerge a bit more, making it far more complex than it was initially.
