Community Tasting Notes 4

December 19, 2020 - In keeping with my last note, this wine is far, far from over the hill. In fact, it was even more robust and put together than the last one. Showing very nice mature character, an impressive for its level mouthfeel and even a little extra complexity over the last bottle. Rustic, yes, but not awkward at all. I do love the vineyard, and this Rion is quite typical, with the strong vintage helping fill in any gaps. I am happy to have plenty of these correct and delightful burgs in the cellar at a fraction of the price of their big brothers and sisters.

June 18, 2019 - Popped and poured this bottle last night after dinner. I used a Riedel Vinum burgundy stem and my husband a syrah stem. The nose showed a bit sharper on the syrah, not sure which was my preference. This wine is chugging along beautifully. The last note from 2014 seems way off base in terms of it falling apart based on my tasting last night. While fully mature, this 2002 was showing nice persistence and a complete palate experience, as well as a very compelling NSG nose. It was not terribly complex - for the price, I don't expect it to be - but I'm delighted to have a bottle which gives me a sense of place and fruit, along with side notes of spice and dirt which I can't get from pinot noir grown anywhere else, all for $30 or so. If you have well stored examples of this wine, don't worry - they should be holding in a great place.

December 24, 2014 - Properly "Les Vignes Rondes" but whatever, the Cellartracker listing is clear enough if wrong. This is a producer that has never impressed me -- the wines seem too straightforward and a bit lacking in intrigue. But this is a stalwart little Nuits that's drinking pretty much at peak right now. I certainly wouldn't cellar it any longer -- the nose is fully mature, darkly-perfumed Cote de Nuits fruit, and the palate while well-integrated seems to be fraying at the edges. That lends toward the wine feeling slightly stretched, although to be fair I don't think this was intended to be cellared till well past its 10th birthday. If for whatever reason you have this wine on-hand, it's time to pop the cork.
