January 14, 2024 - Revelatory bottle. Opened mid-day and I was encouraged by the relative freshness and presence of the fruit. Good cork, not fully saturated and decent pop when I pulled. Poured a glass about 3 hours and then set about seriously evaluating the wine at about 4-5 hours. The fruit is bright and red, morello cherry but backed by some spice and leather. In time, some earthy underpinnings emerge. The wine keeps getting better over a several hour period, remains bright, held together by good acid, and seems very much at peak. I might have rated higher if I could coax more aroma from the glass but on the palate the wine is oh so good! I had an early revelation with 79 PT in Florence in the mid80s, and always hold after-acquired bottles to unrealistic expectations. But this one really showed up and was a profound experience. Thank you Mr Manetti and Mr Gambelli!

September 5, 2023 - In Magnum. This is exceptional. Balanced. Full of acid. But also a fresh sour cherry fruit of some sophistication. There is a brightness to the wine that is truly remarkable at 35 years. Good length. Testimony to the ageability of Sangiovese. Bought on release - which actually pretty frightening. With tomato risotto and good friends. Memorably good.

December 25, 2022 - In the famous words of Ignatius Chan of Iggy’s, wine notes eventually all sound the same, but it’s more important who you had the wine with. I must agree with the last few wine notes. This is probably one of the most significant LPT wines I’ve had in my life. I would not have expected the ‘88 to retain so much of its fruits and have such a long finishing. The complexity is definitely there and the acid still fresh. The tannins have largely melted away and would be as one would put it…silky, but not yet velvety. There is this wonderful complexity of dark morello cherries, malt (my BIL would say barley) and wet forest floor on the nose that continues to subtly changes in the glass, but never quite deviates from the primary notes of dark fruits, minerality and earthiness. This wine is one for the ages.

June 12, 2022 - Slightly metallic right out of the bottle, but cleaned up quickly in the glass. This was a beautiful wine, just so complete and pretty. The best example of Pergole Torte I've tasted, very special.

May 28, 2021 - Poured blind, as part of a two bottle flight, paired with the 2012. This 1988 is money. Cherries, tar, very juicy, lightly colored in the glass. One thing I called out in my notes last night was the rose petal flavor, which I called 'liquefied rose petal'. Gorgeous. Tangy and youthful with plenty of lithe cherry. Sweet leather and creamy into the finish. This is so damn fresh and delicious for now 30+ years old.. Wow.
