April 13, 2024 - I'm absolutely loving the reds coming out of the 2002 Burgundy vintage right now. Slow oxidised for an hour and a half prior to dinner at Fulgurances in New York, this is one of the better examples of Clos Vougeot I've had the chance to open up. The nose was highly aromatic, boasting great aromatic balance between scents of raspberries, smoke, leather, cinnamon, florality and light cedar wood. The palate, though, felt like it was dealing a tit for tat, continuing on with that theme of balance as red cherries created vibrancy on an upfront before a tertiary mid-palate of sous bois and licorice emerged. That tit for tat returned with a menthol-driven, short finish that re-introduced freshness to the backend. This beat out a 2017 Domaine Dujac Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru 'Aux Combottes' on the night.

August 19, 2018 - PNP into Zalto Burgundy glass (“Flower” day): Medium ruby with a slightly bricking rim.

Concentrated nose of savoury, bacon-meaty and almost coffee-like aromas alongside a streak of darker red fruits (less black fruits though), fresh herbs and spices. Very finely detailed, layered and lots of nuances.

With all that on nose, it comes as a pleasant surprise that this is no over-extracted wine with a good backbone of minerality and acidity on palate without sacrificing any of the power most would come to relate to this terroir. Tannins are indeed velvety and projects a sense of harmony to the slightly spicy finish.

Great style to have and a superbly elegant, nuanced and refined Clos Vougeot. 94 points.
