  October 20, 2009 - I suspect there's a pretty good wine in here somewhere. My first impressions were very positive for a relatively inexpensive aglianico. But two things quickly distracted me. First, upon greater scrutiny, it appears this might be very slightly corked, but not enough for me to slap FLAW all over it. Second, while I've never done this before in 600+ tasting notes, I'm deducting a point in my score because the stugatzz importer with the pretentious sounding name of "Soilair Selection" chose to lightly emboss the vintage on the back label in white-on-white so it virtually escapes detection without the aid of an electron microscope. There's fine raw material lurking underneath, which manages a rich, plummy and dark berry intensity while delivering 13% alcohol, just what the doctor ordered for a Tuesday night. Excellent balance, a smooth, nearly velvety finish that belies its modest price. But the musty overlay distracts, and as I made my way through the bottle I concluded that it wasn't corked at all, but it had some of the same moldy barrel character of old-style Rioja, which was not a plus. A second bottle would be worth trying to see if it's stylistic or an accident/bottle variation.
