August 20, 2017 - Henri Jayer Dinner (Ming San's): A rather different expression from the 2001 that preceded it - this did not quite possess the veneer of modern polish the younger wine had - but it was no less elegant, and perhaps even more enjoyable for that. The nose was full of lovely sweet red-fruit - cherries and raspberries - powdered with a dash of high-toned Chinese herbs, a touch of Vosne's wood spice, and just that little sprinkle of of vanilla bean. Nice. It had an absolutely delicious palate - full and round, with layers and layers of flavours: from savoury sour plums and a nice meatiness, to hints of spice and herb, a shade of the fruit suggested in the nose, then a rather earthier finish full of savoury, meaty satisfaction; all of this riding on a firm underlying structure of velvety tannins and fine acidity. Such a yummy wine, and probably at the perfect place for drinking too.
