November 5, 2023 - Vinetasters: Old Cabernet (Park Ridge, IL): Served double blind. A touch of iron here. Leathery, pyrazines, and maybe even a touch of brett? Thought this could have been some modern analogue of the old Cordier wines, but generally cleaner and with a little more fruit. My 7th, group's 6th.

November 6, 2022 - Vinetasters: Howell Mountain (Park Ridge, IL): Served double blind. Plummy, dark fruit on the nose, with a sweeter/riper tinge and a little baking spice as well. On the palate, some clear pencil shaving notes. This feels like it could still benefit from a little more aging time. I guessed mid-1990s Bordeaux here. My 4th, group's 6th.

October 9, 2022 - Incredibly, this wine is still singing after 32 years! Initial blast of tertiary notes on the nose... band-aid, mushroom, funk clears after about an hour in the decanter (I was worried to decant such an old wine). Bright beam of red fruit shines through the tertiary notes and the grippy tannins are still there. The mouth feel is thin for Howell, but incredible after all this time. Very impressed.

July 12, 2022 - Dark purple color with hints of brown. Bouquet of berries, tar and bark.
Solid acidity, good fruit. Firm tannins with hints of dust.the wine was well balanced, mature but good life. Nice balance and finish.

April 24, 2022 - 48x 1990 (37x Bdx, 6x Napa, 5x others): Six Napa wines were added to this Bdx tasting. 1990 was not an overly exciting vintage in Napa Valley, clearly overshadowed by the 91/92/94 vintages. Almost all of the wines are past peak with not enough fruit left. In addition the vintages misses a bit of charm and creaminess and remains rather on the astringent side of things. The only star was the Heitz Martha’s Vineyard (94 pts) which showed complex, savoury, balanced and creamy with that typical Martha’s mint kick. Opus (92 pts) and Heitz Bella Oaks (91 pts) were still ok, while the La Jota Howell Mt (86 pts) and Simi Reserve (87 pts) and Latour Beaulieu Reserve (dead) were past peak.

TN: Medium expressive nose full of herbs, minty notes, minerality. No depth. On the palate at first better, fresh dark cassis fruit, minerality, herbs, no tertiary aromas. Overall quite pleasant and fine with a fine structure and good tenison but not enough substance to truly excite. At first 92-ish pts. But with time rather more broth/soy sauce notes, pointing towards a fast decline. 86 pts
