  June 8, 2020 - Cellared since release...was a HUGE KB fan back in the day...the 2003 Sonoma/RRV Pinots set me on the path for Ca. Pinot...then eventually that ended when the Burgundy black hole sucks you in! Still enjoy Ca. Pinot, but not as much of a fan as I use to be with these higher octane style cuvees. This 03 Cohn is showing the vintage wit some heat and little rust! 15.5 abv...not the hot mess like some 06's, but noticeable. Ample fruit still...more stewed than I like, as well as some tomato patch, which I don't like....I HATE TOMATOES! Creamy and silky dark liqueured berry fruits...still nice sweetness, holding well...dusty sandalwood spice, coffee, dried bing cherry/tobacco, brown sugar, white pepper...lovely cherry and potpourri florals. Lot of deep dark complexities...super nice at times...and totally reminds me of the 03's I loved in the beginning...but that damn heat just distracts, and throws the balance all out of whack! And just a hint of that stewed tomato is not to my liking. I still find some pleasure in this, so not all is lost...as well as the great memories from the early days. Still have an 02/04 left of the Cohn...so we'll see what those bring in a less hot vintage.

  March 18, 2017 - If you're AFWE or just strongly prefer classical Burgundian styling to stereotypical New World pinots, this wine is not for you. If you like the K-B style (at least from this era ... I have no idea whether it's evolved), you will really like this wine if your bottle has been well stored, like mine. It has the usual cherry Jolly Rancher, cola, and cherry cola aroma and flavor profile, with some pleasing herbal bitterness on the finish to keep the sweet fruit from becoming especially cloying. Medium bodied and silky on the palate -- in fairness I would never mistake this for a Cali Syrah unlike some overwrought pinots of this era -- the tannins are fully resolved and the acidity seems MIA on the attack and mid-palate, but then creeps up pleasantly on the finish. Somewhat warm reflecting the 15.5% ABV, but there is enough stuffing to keep it just within my personal tolerance limits (though I am more liberal than many when it comes to ABV if there are countervailing factors).

  January 9, 2012 - Drank our last bottle of this beauty for my wife's birthday. Clear and bright aromatically with some earthy aromas mixed with clove and raspberry. On the palate, there's some cherry, light cola and a little bit of a medicinal quality that prevented this from scoring higher but still a really good wine. I think 2012 will be the year I finish the last of my 2003 SVDs, I think they are just past the peak but still drinking well.

  December 30, 2010 - This was a bottle that we picked up at KB when we stumbled upon this winery on a trip to Sonoma in 05. Nancy's bithday today and KB is her favorite wine. Had with rack of lamb (not a typical PN pairing, but this holds up).

  July 17, 2010 - Blind Pinot tasting (Bellevue, WA): (Group's #2 (my #3)) – 2 first place votes, 2 second place votes, 3 third place votes – The nose showed cherry and some dull citrus aromas with a note of anise. This nose also continued to evolve throughout the flight, and at times it had some Cabernet-like qualities. The palate was all about California styled Pinot though with cherry, cola and some citrus notes. This had nice acidity and a medium-long finish. I ended up ranking this 3rd only because there were times that the nose didn't seem quite right for a Pinot. I'm sure it was the barrel treatment that brought out the anise aroma, but it seemed odd while we were drinking it blind.
