Community Tasting Notes 5

May 7, 2024 - Lovely. Really smooth & soft. Opened & smelled like an amontillado. Dark hazy blood red. Nose is leather, polish, some spice. Very smooth, velvet, rich, loads of tangy red fruit. Really long & then a slight amontillado end with red fruit

January 15, 2021 - Was looking forward to trying this as I have had many truly great mature Riojas. This was good but not more. Bottle in very good condition, bottom neck fill, clean and dry cork top with perhaps 2/3 from the bottom soaked. Clear garnet with very little browning. Elevated acidity and while this gained some weight with more air, it remained unbalanced and slightly tired with some vegetable notes lurking in the background. Little fruit left but medium (-) tannnis. Short finish dominated by acidity.
Have one more bottle but this one was clearly on the downwards slope.

March 2, 2017 - Traditional Rioja (RSJ, London): Fresh, mid red fruit mid red fruit, a little brighter on the nose than palate. Lighter framed with good acidity. A touch of orange peel and ground coffee on the mid palate. Finishes brightly. Lovely. ****

May 14, 1992 - An even, nicely mature appearance. Decent nose. Slightly raisiny on the palate. A bit lacking somewhere.

January 24, 1991 - Tasting of 5 Spanish Reds at Primas. Was the most expensive and the most rewarding, on the nose, it was intensely fruity, gravelly with hints of bark, tasted rich, intense fruit, almost forward, great big, long finish, needs 5 years to improve. My #1.
