June 22, 2016 - Nose of purple fruit and black pepper. Flavors follow the nose, soft on the palate and a slightly sweet finish. A bit wanting for a touch more acidity, making the wine feel a bit ponderous. Still, while I'm not a Grenache fan, I rather liked this. Probably best to drink remaining bottles within the next 18 months.

June 20, 2016 - The Other 7% of California (Chicago, IL): Very peppercorny -- both white and black. This comes quite close to a Rhone wine, and there's some good restraint here as well. Meaty and a nice touch of sweet fruit as well. The finish comes off a little dusty, and this is a bit more larger-scaled than I like my grenache. Would have liked a little more acidity to give this wine more lift.

March 9, 2015 - Light ruby, almost amber in color. Nose presents strawberry, along with a funky smoky/meaty/Worcestershire sauce note and some brown sugar-esque spice. On the palate, some nice light strawberry and blackberry character, a touch of tea and earth, very nice rustic character overall. Tannins are rather substantial but integrate nicely, acid is present but not clearly defined. Decently long finish. Not very concentrated overall but an interesting and enjoyable bottle that should probably be drunk sooner rather than later. 88-89

September 22, 2014 - My last bottle, this was opened last night. For tonight, this shows a fair amount of strawberry jam, loam and a peaty note. For context, this was drank next to the 2008 Jemrose Syrah, and that wine shows less jammy quality. I enjoy this for the fruit but it does show some heaviness. Given that weight of medium plus, and the ligther acidity, I would go with a drink soon recommendation.

December 15, 2013 - Wow, three years in between bottles. I opened this last night, and had a few key impressions. At first, shy and seemingly more old world, juicy and a little rustic, which I enjoyed. Then, with air, the edges fattened up and the wine got bigger (listed at 14.1% ABV), seemed to speak a bit more of a new world expression. Run forward now 24 hours, I got this at about room temp, call it 65. Aromatically, some red-fruited jam emerges, with just a shading of ripe tones. The palate shows the same strawberry and cherry core of yesterday, juicy but lending itself a bit into a hard candy note, too. Some herb, a little rustic cherry in the core. Cutting through these fruit notes is some bright acid, and just a hint of the secondary, soily flavors that I commented on about yesterday. You know, it might be a cool experiment to let this wine sit another 3-5 years and see if that secondary set of flavors can really get into this wine. I think this could turn into a really cool bottle, shedding off the remaining red-fruit fat. All in, this is good grenache and Jim's intent to not make a Big Flavor CA wine has worked, IMO. There is some ripeness here, yes, but nothing that would speak to grenache that gets into the bigger 14s and 15+ zone of ABV. I have one left, I will hold the last one until 2017 and see what happens.
