February 9, 2020 - {Purchased on release, professional storage, perfect fill} Nice color saturation, no orange, pronounced currants, menthol and some green pepper elements to nose and palate, as well as some brambly fruit. Refined tannins. Ok length but not better. This bottle is very similar to one ~ 2 years ago and am disappointed that a 2000 after 20 years is this pedestrian. I think the 2003 and 2005 are better and Sociando-Mallet can do better than this. This much green pepper (yuck for me, never attractive), and lack of attractive aromatics or length, really detract from the wine.

There is nothing, zippo, sexy about this wine, it is an intellectual but not emotional experience to taste it. Notes from Derek Darth Taster and Fruitsrouges are spot on. Having said that the wine does not fall apart, it has reasonable fruit-tannins balance, and it is not unbalanced when it comes to 'size' of fruit and alcohol levels. Still, am putting it aside and rummaging through cellar for a likely simpler, but more attractive, Bourgogne tonight.

February 1, 2020 - Perfect cork, professionally stored since accepting delivery. Served at cool cellar temp seemed just right. Lead pencil on nose and palate. some dark berry fruit, integrated tannins, very smooth. Enjoyable on its own and with grilled or roasted meat. Was a great value purchased as futures at time when French wine was not in fashion because of their opposition to U.S. invasion of Iraq.

January 10, 2020 - PNP. Green bell pepper background. Hopefully this will integrate in the future. Will try again in 5 years.

(Chateau Sociando-Mallet Haut-Médoc) There is a lovely depth of aroma here, a nose full of leafy blackcurrant fruit, with a fresh and rather surprising seam of mint and a green peppercorn lift. Nice weight, softly composed, and still in possession of quite a grip and tannin beneath it all. There is very good substance here. The nose is a little awkward at present, but overall I still think this has much potential for the future. Very good indeed.
