Community Tasting Notes 2

May 20, 2012 - I think that this is the best Lenoir "Black Spanish" wines I've had, and I'm pretty sure that the waxed top made a big difference. This wine was hanging out in the bottle for a good 2 years. When rearranging some wines, the wax top cracked off, so out of reflex I grabbed a bottle opener and opened the bottle! I give this a 91 on its very interesting style. The wine poured a nice purple color into the glass. The nose is ALL blueberry and vanilla. Close your eyes and it reflects to blueberry pie. The taste, however, is slightly different, with blueberry being the primary fruit, but there is quite a bit of banana and even an undertone of some plum. The back of the wine is a bit tart, making me wonder if perhaps I have waited 6 months too long to open this one. But, on the finish, a nice silky, blueberry rich finish takes over with some undertones of honeysuckle, caramel and tobacco, leaving you with a subtle alcohol finish, although not too heady. This one was a pop and pour. I did not decant as this one is probably ready to fall apart, and likely will be vinegar if I recork and wait until tomorrow to finish the last quarter. If you have this wine, drink it now. This is one worth seeking a replacement.

January 6, 2012 - Blueberry and tons of kitchen spice notes burst from the glass aromatically. Cardamom, allspice, cinnamon, and ginger show immediately afterward, giving way to wild clover honey and earthy tones of chocolate, suede and smoke. Very complex and extremely unique on the nose, this is a very inviting wine.

The palate is defined by a bright acidity initially with a smooth, soft mouthfeel. Refined and delicate with lots of kitchen spice, soft tones of molasses, wild clover honey, and plenty of plush red fruit show at the core. Interesting notes of chocolate, caramel, and tobacco also make an appearance, just before a honeyed, pleasantly bitter, and lasting finish. Truly something different, this is also a very well made wine and one that every true wine lover should try to seek out.
