Community Tasting Notes 9

April 3, 2022 - This was really fantastic. The lovely secondary and tertiary notes I associate with a well-aged CS. This had notes of cigar box, old leather, rubber, and was just so smooth and seamless on the palate. WOTN for me and others, in a field that included some aged Cayuse, including Bionic Frog and Coccinelle. Thanks Jason for contributing this!

September 25, 2016 - 1980s Bordeaux at Riverbend (Oregon): Dark, opaque ruby. Big, plummy, dark fruited wine. Rather funky initially, but this disappeared with 30+ minutes in decanter. Plush with resolved tannins; steadily evolved and added nuance, though to my palate it lacked some of the freshness of the best Bordeaux tasted alongside. The cork disintegrated - the worst one of the evening - but the wine didn't suffer for it. Decanted 90 minutes ahead.

August 15, 2013 - Friends' Anniversary Dinner (Anvil Club, East Dundee): Opened by m/m thelostverse at their anniversary dinner. Deep opaque inky crimson color with no bricking. Aromas of blackberry, cassis and kirsch liqueur give way to leather and plum notes. Medium tannins, with blackberry, plum and chocolate flavors. Constantly evolving in the glass, the bouquet displayed lavender, licorice, violets and tobacco over the couple of hours it was open. Maintained wonderful balance, with flavors of licorice and black fruit. Showing very well with wonderful depth and complexity. 94-95 pts.

August 15, 2013 - Wine bid purchase for 26th anniversary dinner at Anvil. Very dark purple color with no visible signs of age. Beautiful nose of leather, tobacco and violets. Others at the table indicated blackberry, but I got more secondary flavors than primary from this bottle. Still a hint of tannin present, although not obtrusive in any way. Velvety mouth-feel with a lengthy harmonious finish. I was worried about this fading quickly once open, but it did not - evolving over the course of the dinner in a beautiful way.

May 15, 2009 - Brought this to a local restaurant. I was so excited about opening it that I forgot to warn the waiter to be gentle with the cork. He ripped it in half and then proceeded to mulch the rest before I took it from him. I had to perform a David Blaine-like magic trick to keep the cork out. It was well worth it, the 1987 is simply stunning. Powerful aromatics of dark fruit, leather and pine never stop. A solidly structured beauty with layer after layer unfolding into sweet tannins on the finish. It can probably last few more years, but why wait?
