Community Tasting Notes 5

September 18, 2022 - No fireworks here but great pleasure to be found nonetheless, especially as this bottle is in relatively fine fettle. The first whiff transports one immediately to the pews of an ancient church. The palate is leafy and spicy with the faintest hint of cranberry and tangerine. Structurally vigorous and with admirable definition. A perfectly resolved wine which, although by no means a superstar, is absolutely à point and a testament to the stellar 1993 vintage.

July 2, 2021 - This bottle (the third of a recent three-bottle-lot at auction) was all one could hope for in well-aged village-level Burg from a producer of this caliber. Merely average nose of cherry and herbal notes that expanded en bouche, especially when paired with food, with red fruits predominating but also showcasing a range of savory notes (mushrooms, forest floor, beef tartare). Worth the tariff at < $50/bottle.

February 29, 2020 - Exceeded expectations, and probably 3 pts better than another bottle from the same auction lot. Red fruits and sous bois on the nose and palate; a rather supple mouthfeel but with fine tannins (and acidity) still noticeable on the finish. Delightful accompaniment to a simple dish of chicken and sautéed gnocchi. Really everything could want in a Burg at this level and with 27 years of age. Objectively should be drunk up soon, but I'll probably sit on my third and final bottle for a couple more years.

February 9, 2018 - Slightly hazy cherry red with an orange tint. The nose is superb: clean, sweet, spiced red fruit (cherry and lots of plum) that speaks of youth. A touch of vanilla oak and a cola note emerge after a few moments. The taste is similar, rather light bodied, with some acidity but also sweetness, and a fragrant quality that's just lovely. I know next to nothing about burgundy, and drink almost no red wine these days, but I took a punt on this as it was in the sale, and I've been rewarded. This is a lovely, fresh wine with a delicacy and fragrance that are quite delightful. It's almost everything I could want in still red pinot noir. [Natural cork; 13% abv; Nickolls & Perks, -19% @£39].
