Community Tasting Notes 3

June 8, 2014 - Unbelievable wine at 77 years of age. Tasted blind. Classic left bank palate with familiar St Estephe finish. No fruit left....

October 29, 2013 - Appeared to be in good shape and looks were not deceiving, it was sublime. It smelled of R.M Williams boots that had just been polished. There were some moss, cedar and earth notes and a delicious vinous sweetness. It had a briny, oyster like texture that you see in many pre-war Burgs and Bordeaux and the whole mouth was enveloped in umami flavour. It was complete with no hard edges but no oxidative notes and had great length.

January 2, 2011 - (02Jan11). h-s bottle, decanted 60 mins before pouring. The cork, well-moist and intact, came out very easily. This is the only 73-year old wine I have ever tasted … and it was not disappointing. Far from it, for the rich brown and red-purple were integrated, even to the rim. The nose was dominated by coal-dust with old wet leaves pointing to the age of this wine, made as Hitler surged to power. What is it about the great sweetness of Cos of this period? The legendary tannin had now dissipated somewhat, leaving this robe of old molasses, but the dominant taste was of leather. An historic artefact, perhaps tarnished with the years, but equally, revealing its character unfettered in its old age. This is a wine that may never have been really great, but its life-support systems will carry its no-nonsense, if perhaps curious features down the next decade or so.
