May 11, 2017 - This is showing serious age in it's color - some brown. The nose is mature, but still going strong: great old Red Burg. I get lots of secondary and tertiary notes: it's sweet with aging fruits, brown sugar, beef bouillon, spices - it still manages to have some sap after all this time. The palate is excellent as well, again still showing some sweetness along with the spices and meat. Both the nose and the palate are showing in the brown and light red part of the spectrum, and doing so nicely. There is good grip and acidity - the balance is quite good. Just lovely. I kept expecting a flaw (1983) and couldn't find any. Not a masterpiece, but excellent mature Red Burg. Thanks Suzanne! Nose - 5.5/6, Palate - 5/6, Finish - 5/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 1.5/2 = 17/20.

August 22, 2015 - 2nd bottle from auction lot. 1st was the worst fill (4cm) and was DOA (oxidized). Slow-O did not help on that one. This bottle (3.5cm), on the other hand, had the magic that I experienced from a bottle from another lot a couple of years ago. Lovely nose of strawberry upon opening so re-corked for later. Re-opened 3 hours later and drank over 6 hours. Started out with the strawberry nose and some rose. Red fruit and earth in the mouth. Soft and short initially, but then the magic begins. Puts on significant length and weight with air. The nose becomes so much more complex with nice spice. Acid emerges to balance the sweet, ripe fruit. Wonderful stuff. I will drink the rest over the next 2-3 years.

January 25, 2014 - Burgs and Rieslings at Amali (Amali, NYC): A wow from the aromatics alone. This is an incredible wine to just sit and smell, with a vivid scent of rose petals, fresh strawberries and more savoury earthy and sous bois notes in the background. The palate presence is remarkable; it's very light on its feet with a gentle, polished texture, tannins fully resolved and bright acids keeping it very fresh and lively still. A real treat.
