March 29, 2024 - Kork komplett durchnässt. Anfangs 86/flawed: Nase: säuredominiert, Alterungstöne, wenig rote Frucht. Mund: vor allem Säure. Etwas modrig. Dann (2 Minuten) 91: Nase: Muffigkeit nimmt ab, stärkere rote Frucht (Brombeere?). Mund: auch hier mehr Frucht/Frische.

November 17, 2023 - drank with The Usual Suspects. Not decanted. (Mistake) Drank well and improved a lot over the tasting. At its peak but not past it. Still with clean red fruit, no oxidation but its best feature was its integration and balance.

September 11, 2022 - Popped and poured. initially somewhat off-putting, but within about 20 minutes, it actually started to smell and taste OK. This is clearly well past its prime, but it is not dead yet. Lots of shoe polish going on. And the color is still more red than brown. I swear Rioja has an amazing ability to last and last over decades. This has thrown lots of large, solid bits of sediment. Interesting experience, but not as impressive as the last bottle; hardly surprising, since it appeared this had leaked past the cork. 5-10-14-6: 85/100.

April 13, 2022 - Quite an interesting experience drinking this. From pop and pour, it was immediately apparent that this wine was still alive and kicking. The color is still more ruby than anything else, though there is just a bit of an orange to rust cast at the edges. Incredibly youthful at 53! This steadily improved as I drank through the entire bottle in about two hours. The nose is sporting nice red cherry fruit with the merest hints of soil and shoe polish. But don't get me wrong--the fruit absolutely dominates. Totally silky-smooth in the mouth, tannin long gone, but plenty of fruit left behind. I don't have tremendous experience with Rioja of this age, but I would say it is either still on its plateau of maturity or perhaps only just beginning what should be a long, slow decline. This is simply stunning, if not terribly complex, based on its age alone. I can only hope the second bottle I purchased shows as well. 5-12-15-8: 90/100. (The cork held up well over the years since it protected the wine for so long, though it crumbled as I removed it. I used the Durand to pull the cork--and I needed it.)
