Community Tasting Notes 3

April 8, 2020 - Bought a 12b case at 11/b (incl all fees and taxes) at a Michael Davis auction about 25 years ago; this is #8, I think. Decanted with normal sediment for its age. Cork almost disintegrated at opening, even using a two-prong puller; bottom was moist and managed to extract that without much trouble. Dark ruby with amber edge; good nose, overripe blackcurrant, hint of cedar, that follow on the palate, though more fruit emerges over the first hour--good to the end after two hours; good mouthfeel; some persistence. As with aged Bdx, fruit is not what comes to mind with this wine--a fruit-oriented description won't fit--but it is certainly a pleasure to drink. Delicious and a remarkable everyday Bdx after 36+ years--example of an experience that rewards collecting over a long period. Very glad I have more. Stored horizontally in a cool, dark basement since purchase. My evaluation: For me, scores on a "100-point scale" are misleading. I use a 4-category scale (perhaps with +/-)--not including flawed--which runs outstanding/notable/drinkable/poor. This is outstanding- when considering quality, age, and price.

December 7, 2014 - Past its peak, but still somewhat enjoyable. Nose is completely developed with mostly cabbage soup, burnt tar, pencil shavings and cherries.

Still some fruit on the palate, but mostly very dry with distinct, but round tannins. Good length but lacking both intensity and complexity.
