Community Tasting Notes 2

March 10, 2011 - (Tasted in Argentina) Ultra-dark; that's what this wine is. It's almost black in the glass. The nose is evasive but tarry, with black fruit like currants and plums and blackberries and blueberries and black pepper and toasted oak. And it takes awhile to open up even this far. On the palate, this is a most exceptional product, tremendously good. The deep and rich qualities that we sense on the nose become more profound on the palate, encouraging meditation. I rarely use the word "mouthfeel" but this wine has one of the best that I have ever experienced. The flavors here are really outstanding, as all that dark richness is balanced by fruity lightness and just the right touch of acidity. Flavors of berries, earth, and hints of vanilla. The finish is crisp, with a final blast of fruit, some iron filings, that nice oak again, and some alcoholic heat. This is Malbec from the warmer (northern) region of Argentina, and you could call it a Napa Valley Contemporary Cabernet Style, except that this is Malbec and thus has more backbone. It's not soft. It's an intense style, well realized. Why not rank it higher? Nose is a bit shy; aging might not improve it.

April 11, 2010 - Disappointing, my least enjoyed of my trip to Argentina. It did improve after breathing, but not enough.
