Community Tasting Notes 5

March 12, 2014 - Wow, totally weird. This is a completely different wine than I had two years ago, so much so that I checked the label and the cork(!). How could I ever have called this 'classically styled'?! This is way over-oaked on the nose and in the mouth and almost syrupy w/ vanilla. Dusty chocolate cherries, and overripe berries. This is anything but devoid of fruit and actually tastes more like some sort of dessert that has been left out too long. It comes across like it has residual sugar (which it doesn't) and is almost cloying in style for a red wine. Just way out of balance. Still cant get over my old note on this wine (perhaps I drank too much of it!)

September 3, 2012 - high tannins, not much fruit, VERY acidic. OK but there IS a reason K&L dumped this on sale....I will never learn...

April 20, 2012 - The 2005 is more robust than the somewhat anemic 2004, but it's also rougher around the edges. A day of airing smoothed things out a little, but this will never be an elegant wine. I also doubt that further aging will yield much - might as well drink it now.

February 2, 2012 - I thought this was a very interesting style of Spanish wine. I found it rather classically styled, and much more old World than most Spanish wines these days. Indeed, it harkened back to a bygone era before they became so over-extracted and alcoholic. But then the grape mix, largely Bordeaux varietals with a Spanish twist, was really interesting, refreshing, and rather surprising. A unique wine with nice fruit, tar, mineral, and animal notes. Medium finish. Has a few years of life, but not sure how much improvement ahead.
