July 9, 2020 - Decanted, luckily through a filter, gobs of sediment, poured immediately. Dark red with a brown tint, almost yellow at the rim. Gorgeous nose, black fruit, maybe some earth, wood, vanilla, a hint of something green. Palate is complex and robust, black fruit, black olive, caramel, leather, vanilla, maybe a hint of anise mid-palate, nicely integrated. Not as velvety as some right-bank Bordeaux, but a very pleasant medium- to full-bodied mouth feel with a lengthy finish. Not very tannic. Wouldn't have guessed it was Merlot, if I had tasted blind (I didn't). Actually reads maybe more left bank or (good heavens) Napa to me, except for the low tannins(?). Fantastic wine!

May 17, 2020 - What a great way to overcome the corona lockdown. Dense, rich, spicy, the Merlot melting so well over the last 10 years. Getting close to St. Emilion perfection, but still young and powerful. Next bottle maybe in approx. 5 years.

May 15, 2020 - Opaque purple color turning violet at the rim with a reflective edge. The legs indicate a ripe, high octane load as corroborated by the nose of perfumed dark fruits, tobacco and smoked herbs. The palate is full-bodied, scrumptious with a lively grip of acidity, and velvety in texture. Black cherry, plums, dark chocolate, vanilla bean, and espresso form the luscious core that finishes long and juicy with gripping tannins laced by mentholated herbs. This is easily a crowd-pleaser and one of the best I’ve tasted from this estate. Drink now with a 30-minute decant until 2034.

May 10, 2020 - Double decanted and left to breathe for 4 hours this wine showed lovely aromatics to match the dark colour with garnet plums, blackcurrants, dark chocolate and charcoal on the nose. The palate has that lovely 82 unctuousness with a sphere of lovely fruits balanced by soft but abundant mature and tannins that build into a long fine finish. Lovely.

January 12, 2020 - Right Bank Bordeaux - Unnamed Atlanta Tasting Group; 1/11/2020-1/13/2020 (Paul & Deanne's Place): Wine #7 - Blind tasting of 10 "Right Bank Bordeaux" - Bottles sampled in flights of 2 then revealed.

Loved this. Guessed left bank ringer. Got vintage right ('09). Didn't note color. Fresh fruit on palate - black cherry, currants, sweet cherry and gravel. On palate, full body with medium acidity, medium tannins and very long finish. Velvety on the palate with similar flavor profile to nose. A Napa drinker's Bordeaux. 93-94 range.

Group's #2 and my #2 (was essentially a tie between an '05 Chateau De Lescours (St-Emilion Grand Cru) and this wine - the '05 won by 1 point so I'd argue a tie)

(Château Canon-la-Gaffelière (St Emilion)) A dense fruit here, rich with the toasty spice of new oak as well. The palate seems to have a remarkable harmony for Canon-la-Gaffelière, the supple fruit combining easily with the firm layer of tannins beneath. There is structure and grip, and although there is a firm seam of tannins contributing to this it is not as overtly displayed as it is in some wines, and it is much more harmonious than in some vintages of Canon-la-Gaffelière tasted at this stage too. Rather a firm, alcohol-tinged body though; the alcohol is declared to be 14%. Overall though, convincing.

(Chateau Canon-la-Gaffelière St Emilion) A very dark wine here, totally in keeping for this estate. The palate is initially withdrawn, but opens out into a style that has a slightly gamey, oak -tinged character. There is a lot of good substance on the palate, with broad and dark fruits, underpinned by lots of tannic grip. The fruit has a very lush, soft, rich style, but also good acidity. No overtly expressed alcohol. Rather it is warm, huge, but balanced. A very good wine and perhaps an example of how the style of the vintage can help those estates where extraction is traditionally high. Or is the extraction itself reined in? Very good.

(Château Canon-la-Gaffelière (St Emilion)) Really dark, deep and savoury character here, showing great interest and substance. The fruit is deeply grained and yet perfumed and fresh too, and this continues through on the palate where the very lovely substance and texture carries the dark fruit found on the nose. Very dark, very rich, with that velvety weight of the vintage, but again with more evident structure here suggesting the wines of this vintage are tightening up somewhat. Impressive substance here. This is very harmonious and convincing. And it is set for great things.
