March 19, 2024 - Quite tight with high tannins initially but after an hour in a decanter, it really opened up. A balanced and very good wine.

    November 19, 2021 - 91/100 #myopinionaboutwine

Variety: 85% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc.

Definitely, the wine has not yet reached its peak state - the tannins are still coarse, so the wine needs aeration. In my case, I decanted the wine and let it breathe for about 2 hours. And here the wine was revealed in full beauty: the wine became round and perfectly balanced.

Color: dark ruby with brick rim
Aroma: classic and everyone's favorite merlot aromas - cherry, plum, blackberry, chocolate, leather and a little pepper
Taste: the wine tastes rich and round with fruity notes and a very long aftertaste

This was my test run at the Lafleur-Gazan 2009 vintage, the second bottle of this vintage I left before the time of the supposed peak of the wine, and this will be somewhere around 2025-2030. So we have to be patient and wait, but for now we enjoy other wines.

January 2, 2020 - First bottle consumed from a half-case purchased en primeur. Some bricking in the glass. Aromatically is very plum predominant with background clove, black raspberry, and cassis. On the palate this starts with a quick burst of acidity. Medium bodied mouthfeel with sour plum and tobacco. Overall this is generally one dimensional and dull. Nothing wrong, but nothing exciting either. Feels like this may be attempting to transition to a tertiary phase, though that is unclear. I find the tasting experience very similar to a tasting note from a 2009 Esprit De L’Eglise in December 2019. I similarly found that wine to be uninspiring and dull. I’m sure Trotanoy and high end Pomerols are far superior, but I have not found the Pomerol's to be very interesting in the 2009 vintage.

Drink in the near term or hold for potential tertiary development, though I suspect that unlikely. Set your expectations before pulling a cork.

April 19, 2019 - This still seemed a little backward to me. Tannins still a little rough. Taste was big on cherry, cassis, some spice and maybe some tobacco. A little one dimensional. Nevertheless an enjoyable wine but not a big wow for a 2009. Maybe it needs more time.
    Score 88. Relative to expectations: - -

January 4, 2019 - Winorama: A winter in Wineland III; 1/4/2019-1/13/2019 (Portland/Willamette, Eureka, Napa): Tried alongside an '02 Cos and it's interesting to see the right versus left bank comparison. This is very much what you'd expect from right bank. Kindof a plushy velvet texture to the wine. Lots of red fruits. Almost bordering on jammy (at least by Bordeaux standards). Approachable and fairly easy.
