December 25, 2022 - Brick red with some brown. Quite savoury/meaty on the nose with gentle Pinot fruit notes coming through as well as soil, forest floor and leather. Still fresh and tasty, however it is not quite tertiary but i think it would have been better drunk 10+ years earlier. Still a fun experience and enjoyable and a nice way to celebrate another Christmas with the family!

November 14, 2020 - 60s Dinner — 1969 Maison Leroy Flight — Echezeaux, Nuits St George’s 1er Cru and Volnay Santanots. All three were purchased on late release from her cellar in 1993.

As we pulled the corks to decant these three we were all struck and delighted by the aromatics that practically leapt from the decanters. All three of these beauties were not only sound but showed a freshness of fruit and spice that was remarkable for wines of this age.

The Echezeaux had the color of wine half its age. It’s aromatics were a mix of elegant layers of red fruit laced with spice and some floral notes. Good acidity contributed nicely to this wines freshness and elegant energy. Lovely mouth feel, perfect balance with a persistent finish. (95)

The NSG had the best fill and color of this trio looking 10 years younger than the Echezeaux. The NSGs aromatics were more red fruit than you normally associate with NSGs. Richest palate of the three gave this a very nice presence and lovely, lingering finish. (95)

The Volnay was the lightest color of the trio, looking more like an old Dujac than the other two Leroy’s, elegant red berry notes, wisps of spice and floral notes, weightless. (93)

It’s flights like this that demonstrate the delicious reward for patience and proper cellaring.

December 14, 2019 - DRC vs Leroy Dinner (Kheam Hock Road): Good rather than great - but about as much as one could expect from a 1969 Echezeaux perhaps. A touch funky on the nose, with plenty of sous bois and meat and dried earth, then bits of plums and red cherries, and bits of violets and spice. Nice, if not for the little bit of funk. The palate had a nice polished depth to it, with red dates and cherries, red berries and plums, with nice bits of violets and earth and spice. Still thick and palate coating, more clearly Leroy in style than the 1979 Clos St Denis we had alongside, and very nice on the palate. Not perfect either though, this sang at a rather flatter note at points, but enjoyable nevertheless. Drink up.

June 4, 2019 - What incredible freshness. The acidity of the vintage has preserved this wine remarkably. We drank it in the cellars of the Palais Coburg in Vienna. It required no decanting. It was such an aromatic wine with soft smokiness and light red fruit that would have paired beautifully with pheasant. An absolute joy to drink. I preferred it to the Musigny of Vogue and La Tache DRC which followed from the same vintage and that's saying something.

January 28, 2019 - CC. Really lovely. Very light, but delicate and floral. High acid palate.
