February 10, 2024 - Had the complexity of a mature Burgundy, but was rather thin, acidic and closed. May not have enough remaining fruit to get to the next gear.

January 19, 2024 - Purchased as a birth year wine for a friend's birthday dinner, I hadn't had a lot of experience with Bouchard's wines outside of their 2012 Le Corton that I enjoyed in Beaune this past summer. I was quite excited to dive in and after slow oxidising the bottle for half an hour, it truly came to life at Lilia in Brooklyn. The nose was not overly aromatic, but it felt burlier than a lot of the Volnay I've had in the past, boasting cigar box and chocolate scents with light blackberries too. The palate shone bright as a quintessential Volnay notes of red cherries and blackcurrants on the upfront quickly transitioned to a pepper, spice and herbaceous driven mid-palate. The ending, though, was what did it for me as the wines maturity began to show through notes of leather, chocolate, light tar and a hint of syrup. All in all, not what I was expecting from a 1er Cru Volnay from 1999, but thoroughly impressed. Really feels like it's hitting its stride right now.

August 26, 2023 - On opening this is disappointing - quite woody, savoury, not much fruit. I thought: oh, too late now, should have drunk 5yrs ago. Then with 45 mins in glass, or from the bottle open to the full width, it's softened, and a mellow fruit emerges, which wit time clarifies. Quite rich, kirschy (reminiscent of a grenache note). It starts with a 90 and lthen lifts to 92. I'm putting this between a village and good 1er in the quality stakes. It lack the complexity to be a great 1er, but has more refinement and depth than a villages.

Burgundy-Report

(Bouchard Père et Fils Volnay Caillerets Ancienne Cuvée Carnot) Deep ruby core, still just a hint of cherry at the rim. The nose is dominated by wood when first opened, taking around 30 minutes to start showing coffee and caramel tones. Another hour shows roasting red fruits and gradually higher tones. The palate has first-class texture, acidity that lingers and super length that has a touch of creamy black cherry about it. Not the outright density of the very best, but it's borne in a very impressive way. Today still far too much wood obscuring its 'Volnay-ness' - should be coming round in another 10 years or so.

(Bouchard Père et Fils Volnay Caillerets Ancienne Cuvée Carnot) Around 4 hectares of this vineyard are owned by BP&F. Medium colour. The lovely Volnay nose is much higher toned than any of the previous wines. Much more oak is obvious on the palate, and coupled with a strong tannic background makes for a wine that is currently a little unbalanced despite pure, persistent fruit and nice acidity. If the oak subdues this will be a lovely wine, not enough balance for today though.
