Community Tasting Notes 21

  • Burgnick Likes this wine: 95 points

January 28, 2021 - Wilted flowers, intense spicebox, red fruit, dark cherry, graphite, stems and sous bois. The palate builds up spectacularly with subsequent pour that has so much grip and depth with lingering sweetness. The richness and texture really distinguish the terroir. A great bottle from a UK single owner cellar.

December 1, 2018 - Ken's 60th Birthday (Smyth and The Loyalist - Chicago IL): I saw at least two aspects of the label I considered questionable, so asked another dinner attendee to take a look. Clear consensus is that this was not likely 1970 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti La Tâche. Then we looked at the bottle of 1970 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Richebourg, which was purchased at the same auction ten years ago (!) by a different dinner attendee, and too many of the incorrect elements were also there.

The wine was completely past its peak, and did not show any of what I would consider DRC characteristics.

October 14, 2017 - Birthday Dinner for a Vintage 1970 Friend (San Francisco): About 5 cm. ullage. Faded red. Lovely spice, stems, faint florality, and beet sugar sweetness on the nose-all of this is not particularly integrated. Light and elegant, faded red fruit, excellent acidity, gentle finish with largely resolved tannin. Good but nowhere near great. I wonder if it was chaptalized given its somewhat disjointed nature and forced sweetness.

August 23, 2017 - This bottle is not in its best condition. Lots of mushroom, earth and prunes on the nose. Palate still has acidity but a bit too plummy
