Community Tasting Notes 4

May 11, 2009 - Having tasted 14 other vintages of GPL over the years back to 1959 I know what it can achieve and generally like the style. It can be a good performer in off-vintages too. Amber at the rim shows a mature colour. Nose is quite gravelly and dominated more by tobacco than cassis - almost Graves-like. Nice, complex mature claret aromas. To taste, a bit astringent on the finish and hard when first tasted but it mellows considerably after a 2 hour decant - give it some air. Then sleek, and solid red-fruits flavours, flavoury, clarety, a hint of green though not excessively so and a modest finish in that earthy, tobacco style suggested by the smell. In all, a decent effort and fully mature - it isn't going to improve but has decent levels of fruit at the moment mingled with plenty of subtle secondary flavours.

June 20, 2008 - Red-claret colour showing plenty of age at the edge.
Nose is a little green/herbal with perhaps a touch of camphor but still pleasant and there is some lurking fruit

The green / herbal notes come through on the palate, but they're not excessive or unbalanced and this is really rather a pleasant 'drinking claret'. No alc % on the label, but I'm guessing a light 12% or so. The acidity is nicely refreshing without overpowering. Bordeaux can do lean quite well at times and a decent effort from the vintage.

July 28, 2000 - Deep ruby colour. Fantastic nose of cigar boxes and mellow blackcurrants. Velvety textured nose. Smooth palate of balanced fruit, tannin and acidity. Mature velvety mouthful. Verygood indeed. Moderately short on account of the vintage.
