  March 8, 2015 - Second Sunday Group: Produttori del Barbaresco Riservas (L's): Dark tawny color- like maple syrup. Aromas of caramel, honeyed pear, tropical fruit cocktail syrup and roasted nuts. Rich texture; flavors of honey, poached pear, caramel apple and toffee. Long finish. Absolutely gorgeous.

  January 22, 2013 - Madeira @ Bistro Cacao (A Malvasia Affair) (Washington D.C.): I always wanted to try this wine side by side with its 1885 counterpart for educational reasons. Both were procured from the Afonso family and comes from Camo dos Lobos vineyards. The main difference is that the 1885 spent most of its time in wood and the 1886 spent most of its time in glass. The nose on this 1886 was a bit shy compared to its flamboyant sibling from 1885. On the palate, the chocolate, fudge and caramel flavors took a back seat to the lighter, more lifted notes of tea, sandalwood, lemons and floral notes. A very racy expression of Malvasia. Not as concentrated as the 1885, but more refined, elegant and filigreed. I kept going back and forth between this wine and the 1885 trying to pick a favorite, but I couldn't. Equally impressive for different reasons.

  February 28, 2011 - (Afonso Family) Very smoky with heat on nose. Lemongrass/galanga as well. I did not take a good note on the palate. Nose - 3/6, Palate - 5/6, Finish - 4/6, Je Ne Sais Quoi - 1/2 = 13/20.

  February 28, 2011 - Barbeito Madeiras: The 65th Anniversary Celebration (The Modern, NYC): Sourced from the Afonso family in Cama do Lobos. I remember this wine being sold in 2005 with a sibling bottling from the 1885 vintage. They were both bottled in 2002; the 1886 was bottled from demijohn while the 1885 was still in cask. I often thought that a side by side tasting of these two vintages would someday make for an educational comparison of glass vs wood. For being in demijohn, this wine did not lack for concentration. Bittersweet cocoa powder, butterscotch and burnt sugar. Weighty and tangy on the palate yet ethereal and weightless on the finish. A beautiful wine that really invites another sip.

  July 24, 2010 - A little older, and showing it a little, so not as concentrated as the 1950 Barbeito Terrantez, but still quite remarkable. Nutty, complex, and delightful. Last day of the rpm Tour, thanks heaps to Joatmon.
