March 6, 2020 - Bitterness with xmas spices on the nose; caramel and toffee on the palate, super fine, but rich and creamy at the same time,; dark honey, expansive in the mouth, with a residual sweetness that's not cloying. Caramel with a background of bitterness. This packs a punch and will sneak up on you, probably not a good lunchtime beer! Best beer in the world? Maybe not for me to say. But I prefer the 8. At La Poupee in Poperinge

    December 3, 2019 - A bottle bought in 2017, best before 12th Oct 2020. Tasted blind.

Moderately cloudy dark syrupy brown color with a moderately big, beige head. Rich yet relatively dry nose of phenolic white pepper-driven spice, citrus rind, some latex, a little bit of grainy malt, light barley porridge tones, a hint of toasted oat bread and a touch of molasses. The beer is full-bodied, grainy and somewhat sweet-toned with flavors of nuttiness, peppery phenolic spice, some syrupy molasses, a little bit of grainy malt, light latex tones, a hint of fruitcake and a touch of bready character. Soft carbonation and medium-to-moderately high carbonation. The finish is dry, peppery and moderately bitter with flavors of malty nuttiness and grainy tones, some latex, a little bit of phenolic peppery spice and a little bit of smoke, a hint of rye bread and a touch of fruit cake.

A solid, well-made Trappist. Nothing mind-blowing, at least this time. I know Westy 12 can be very impressive at times, but now the beer was nothing arresting. Just a typical, balanced quad with lots of sweet-toned flavors of syrupy malt and fruit cake. I wonder if the bottle aging had created that subtly latex-like note there, because I can't remember tasting such in any Westy previously.
