Community Tasting Notes 4

October 22, 2023 - Spherical today with perfectly integrated structure and aromatic delineation- a wine of arrival, indeed! Elegant and rich nose of orange pekoe/black tea spice with subtle soil notes, a cabinet full of dried herbs and spice with quintessential root vegetable/onion compote backdrop to the aromas and flavors. Supple and spicy palate with everything in the right place! Makes you curious about more ‘66 Drouhin bottlings.

October 21, 2023 - Serious rusty red with slightly amber rim; stunning, effusive nose with rich tertiary fruit; Earl Grey tea, sous bois, truffles, soy, Asian spices, beautifully-soil inflected in a Gevrey way; absolute autumnal glory here! Had that sweet vs savory tension going on; elegant yet still a big rich wine; even had that classic blood orange top note in the wonderful finish. Hard to ask for anything more (another large pour maybe??!!)

September 29, 2022 - Having acquired a couple more of these from a more reliable source (and breaking my usually sacred rule to let any older wine rest for a minimum of several weeks to recover from travel shock), I opened this, the one appearing most “risky” (banged up, stained capsule and slightly sunken cork, slightly more ullage). More deeply colored than previous bottle, surprisingly more youthful secondary character, very Vosne-like spice box tones, soil-inflected, richer fruit and more structured. This had loads of potential life ahead and tempers any urgency in cracking the other few recent bottles purchased. 92+

August 22, 2022 - Delayed posting this note as I was eyeing an opportunity to acquire additional bottles from a different source. Color of a wine with considerable age, almost a rusty tawny; appealing brown sugar notes with hints of toffee and minty herbs; ripe sweet cherry fruit, mainly tertiary; classy autumnal character slowly emerges, the classic Drouhin acidity is tamed by the wine’s most flattering aspects. Regal, long finish. Consensus 94-95 and taking the bronze in a tasting including a ‘61 Bonnes Mares and a ‘47 Romanee St Vivant. Excellent
