October 5, 2019 - One of the best Beaucastels I have had in several years. Decanted for an hour. Heavy sediment. Should drink well far a decade. Outstanding.

October 4, 2019 - Another bottle that required 3+ hours decant. Brown with an unappealing nose and taste at opening, after significant time in the decanter it eventually reveals deep leather and tobacco flavors with a long finish. Drank after a 2005 Croix du Bois - it's shocking how much livelier wines that are only a few years younger than the Beaucastel are in comparison. Net - a great wine, but continues to be disappointing relative to expectations, with wide variations between bottles.

October 1, 2019 - the first bottle did not seem flawed on the nose but the fruit had abandoned the wine as it it were corked. The second bottle as I remember from a year ago; soft, full in the mouth with caressing flavours of black plums and cherries.

September 27, 2019 - När vi drack den senaste flaskan för fyra år sedan sa vi att den sannolikt tunnlade. Nej. Det här vinet är över. Tycker detta är en gravt överreklamerad producent. Tyvärr.

September 15, 2019 - We are guessing an off bottle as its a far cry from the 93 we rated this albeit 9yrs ago and the rest of the ratings in CT . Ours was a bit sweet and on the dull side so we will refrain from rating this time round.

(Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf du Pape) A dark and maturing wine, with a very deeply coloured core and a dusty red rim. Richly styled on the nose, a very ripe character, with slightly baked cherry fruit, sweet with the scents of dense, freshly tanned leather along with tobacco, liquorice and spices, especially cloves. There is little in the way of fruit, the aromas more earth, cedar and mushroom. There is a slightly chalky edge to it, and a raspberry-on-toast element though. On the palate it is dense, hugely concentrated, firm and still tannic. Around this lies a plush and creamy substance. The fruit character is baked, with some sweetness, and a peppery finish. After a couple more hours in the decanter it feels more tightly reined in, more elegant. It remains dark and dense but with a more savoury, meaty element to it, and a cooler sense to the structure, with greater freshness as a result, but it still shows all that unresolved substance. There is great potential here, but it feels a little confused at present.

(Chateau de Beaucastel Châteauneuf du Pape) A great and obviously maturing hue here, red tones towards the rim but with a dark, dusty, treacly-tawny hue at the core. A lovely nose, obviously ripe but not overly warm or soft. The nose has elements of liquorice, and then is more gamey although with a firm and well-framed character. Dark and curranty and smoky fruit, with a ripe, roasted-but-not-sweet raspberry element too. The palate is supple but very rich, structured, with a good ripe and upright tannic backbone with plenty of firm acids too. Almost elegant in terms of its dancing presence on the palate, but it reveals more substance and depth towards the finish. A great wine, with a punchy, albeit slightly warm finish, which just sings potential. A different class (and something of a different style) to many of the other wines here. This is excellent, and given time it could be one of the greatest Beaucastels ever.

(Chateau de Beaucastel Châteauneuf du Pape) Very dense, opaque and concentrated, with incredibly dense roasted cherry fruit on the nose, pure yet feral and meaty, with fabulous intensity. This is remarkable. Full, creamy, dense and concentrated on the palate, yet fresh and cool, extracted, full of smoky and meaty fruit. Fabulous, broad, feral and characterful, a remarkably rich wine, packed with extract of smoky blueberry and just screaming potential for the future. This is an incredible vintage for Beaucastel, and I am glad I have my other bottles safely tucked away in the cellar.

(Chateau de Beaucastel Châteauneuf du Pape) This has a deep colour, with a purple tinge. Wow - what an intense nose, full of slightly rubbery dark fruits. The palate is wonderful, balanced and textured, but with power, and perfect acidity making for a delightful fluid elegance. Tarry-ripe, but with attractive floral notes too. Truly brilliant wine with superb potential for the cellar. Needs 10-15 years.

Rockss and Fruit

(Chateau Beaucastel) This is stunning!! Incredible soil-driven aromas of wet earth, cherry liquor, bark. Little tight right out of the gates but that bright Grenachey fruit is there with a hint of horsehair and barnyard. But what is very compelling about this wine is the smell of rich, wet soil. I have never smelled a wine that has this type of pure expression of soil. The palate is very primary but just shows dazzling complexity and length. Strong acids and amazing purity are the hallmarks of this bottle. I have to get more of this.

(Chateau de Beaucastel Châteauneuf du Pape) Wonderful depth of colour, a dark, inky purple. Great nose - sweet Grenache cherry character, with real depth. Mourvèdre shows through more on the palate, which is meaty with cigar box nuances. Full of fruit, powerful, but with elegant balance. Lovely tannic structure underneath it all, hidden by the fruit at present. Undoubtedly top wine of the tasting, north and south. Tasted in
